Here's another blast from the past - the old Jude's Diner on Main Street in Newark, Delaware. I believe this was from 1993?

This one's for all you Newark, Delaware music scene old heads out there - a little blast from the past. I only ever saw this video once, at Sean Pierce's place years ago. The song is Twisted Embryo and it's from Firetribe. Circa 1993 maybe? Enjoy.

Here's a brand new collage, entitled Turbo-hydramatic. 18 inches square. Mixed media on paper. Enjoy.
And the first batch of collage skateboards are now available on the Artsprojekt site - you can pick one up here. And if you haven't already, please join my fan club on there - I need all the props I can get. Appreciated.
Saw Crazy Heart over the weekend which was decent although maybe a little slow? Jeff Bridges really nailed the whole alcoholic outlaw/Waylon Jennings vibe though and his performance was pretty strong. I don't know - I kind of felt like I'd seen that movie before but done a little better. It's pretty standard rock flick fare with a country twist and fairly predictable. Worth a rental though.

Sorry for the lapse in updates but I got served with a harsh but short case of the flu that knocked me out for a few days. During that absence though, this site hit the five year milestone. Hard to believe it's been that long, bro. Time flies when you're having fun (or not paying attention.)
Anyway, still working on giving this site an entire facelift so updates will be a little less frequent in the coming weeks. Hopefully it'll all be worth it though.
And apparently, the Conquest shirt I designed a few years back was featured on the zumtees blog, which is pretty cool. Pick one up for yourself here.
Picked up the new Thrasher vid, Prevent this Tragedy, and was stoked to hear two Spindrift tunes on the sound track. Good to see Kev and crew are still moving things forward. The vid's pretty sick too - Guzman kills it.
The Sky Drops play Mojo 13 in DE tonight and, in case you missed it, the also got a really nice write up in the Philly City Paper a few weeks back. Good to see them finally getting some much deserved local props. Hopefully 2010 will be their year to break through.
And speaking of music, I'm really digging the new Raveonettes album. Worth checking out if you're into that whole Ramones meets Jesus and Mary Chain sound.
And for those who've been asking - yes, the post from this past Tuesday about Nick P. is totally true. You think I'd make up something like that?
Finished a few more decks for my collage skateboard series - they'll most likely be up for sale on the artsprojekt site sometime before the end of the month. Stay tuned.

Every once in a while, someone asks me "Hey man, what's Nick P. been up to? I mean, where's Nick P. been man. What's the deal." Well, here's the scoop kids - Nick P. went underground and, like Madonna before him, has reinvented himself once again and is hosting burlesque shows under the mysterious moniker of Senor Eleganté. No joke - a picture is worth a thousand words.

Random Things Learned Over the Past Few Weeks: 1. Apparently Mike Tyson had gonorrhea when he won his first heavy weight title fight. Who knew? Well, if you haven't seen the Tyson doc yet, it's good but not the happiest story ever told, obviously.
2. Alec Baldwin is on a comedic roll. Check out It's Complicated 'cause the proof is in the pudding bro. Great film (but be sure to watch it in a theater filled with slightly intoxicated divorced women over 50 to get the full experience).
3.The Hangover is just as funny as everyone says it is. Nice one Todd Phillips.
4.Barkley Hendricks paintings are like the visual equivalent of the Stax record label in the 70's. So good - worth checking out for sure.
6.And if we're gonna talk sweets - I stumbled upon the epic brownie sundae combination - one part Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip, one part homemade creme de menthe brownie and one part dark chocolate hot fudge. No whip cream 'cause this paradise is all killa, no filla.

Happy New Year everyone! Nice to see you on the other side. Hope you got what you wanted or deserved this holiday season.
Well, things are moving full steam ahead here as usual, with lts of cool things on the plate for 2010, including a solo show at the Slingluff Gallery in October as well as plans to give this site a complete overhaul so stay tuned.
In the meantime, Justin (aka slowmotiontrax) recently uploaded this never before seen video for the song Modern Dances, from The Situation'sdebut album. We shot this at Silk City in Philly in December of 2005 (check out entry #227 for the complete time warp). The shoot ended up being a bit of a poorly organized fiasco, for numerous reasons that we won't go into, and the footage was discarded for a few years, until Justin rediscovered it and put together this edit, which I think ended up looking pretty good, all things considered. Enjoy.
So I recently finished up a few t-shirt designs for Abnormal Tees (ABNRML) in Delaware - the first was a series of rorschach-inspired ink blot designs with three different variations to choose from (see below). The other features a custom "crazy face" illustration (also see below). Anyway, I just got a box of samples, in various sizes so, if anyone out there would like one - please shoot me an email with your name, address and t-shirt size because I will be raffling a few off and sending them to the lucky participants.
Well, if you're in the northeast USA, then you're getting ready for the first snow of the season - we'll have to wait and see if mother nature delivers.
That's it for me - have a great weekend everyone.

Forgot to mention this previously but I did see Up in the Air a few weekends ago and it was pretty solid. There was a definite "realness" in the presentation of the pitfalls of corporate America and it's recent economic downturn and I really liked that he used non-actors for the firings scenes, which gave the whole thing a little more life. And between that and Mr. Fox, Clooney is on a pretty strong roll.
On the flip side, I also saw Funny People and was seriously disappointed at how bad it was. Not sure why - since I'm generally not a fan of Jude Apatow and didn't really care for Knocked Up, Walk Hard or most of the other movies he's been involved in. Am I missing something? Not a big fan of Seth Rogan either so I don't know what I was thinking. Plus the film dragged on and on for a solid 2 and a half slow hours. Sorry bro, but not my thing.

Sorry for the delay but I woke up yesterday to a flooded basement and water shooting out of the kitchen drain, thanks to tree roots blocking up the sewage line. And to add just a little salt in the wounds, I had just put the final coat of paint on the newly refurbished basement not even 12 hours before. New linoleum floor took a pretty good beating, as did the subfloor, and now looks like a piece of paper after you spill a cup of coffee on it. Nature will always have it's way.
But, on the positive side, I finally got around to listening to the Monsters of Folk album and it's pretty damn good. I'm always weary of "super groups", because generally the people's egos tend to get the better of the music, but these dude's all seem to be on the same page and it shows. It's a great album. Now I regret not seeing them in Philly last month.

The Sky Drops recorded a brand new (and very good) original Christmas song and, in the spirit of the season, are giving it away free on their site. That's right free - as in Recession Proof. It's called Christmas Feels Like Halloween so, yeah, you get the best of both worlds with that one. Plus they're heading out this week toward a three days worth of gigs in Seattle and Portland so if you're in the great northwest, do yourself a favor and definitely check them out. Safe travels my friends. More info here.
And Aaron Rose has started a really cool web-based show called DIY America over on the Wieden - Kennedy site. The first episode is Skate and Create and, apparently uses a lot of great b-roll footage left over from the Beautiful Losers film. Can't wait to see what comes next.
And I've been working on a new series of collage based skate graphics - check out a sneak peek below. Not sure where these will end up yet though.....

Saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox over the weekend and it was damn good. The claymation was wonderfully detailed and I was really impressed that even though it was based on a kids book and it was all done it clay, it still had that Wes Anderson feel, from everything to the set pieces down to the costumes. He really nailed it on this one. And the soundtrack, as usual, was pretty killer, with more than a couple Beach Boys tunes thrown in for good measure.
Tofurky soda? No, I'm serious - Tofurky soda! If anyone's had the cojones to try this, let me know how.
And if you're looking for something a little different for that special someone on your holiday shopping list, may I suggest to you something from the Mighty Joe Castro artsprojekt store? I mean, it is cyber-monday after all.

Ok, Ok - I know I'm stealing this from Philebrity but it's just too good. I try not to get too political on here, but Sarah Palin scares me, for numerous reasons and this video pretty much hits the nail on the head. God help America because the ignorance on here is insane. Enjoy.

Saw Pirate Radio over the weekend and thought it was pretty good - not mind blowing mind you but good fun, as rock-n-roll should be. There's not really a strong storyline - it's more like a collection of funny stories, which gives it the vibe that you're just hanging around with some old heads listening to tales of the rock's glory days and realizing that, sadly, you were born too late. Plus there's lots of Kinks tunes, which is a plus.
Anyway, I'm looking to pick up an inexpensive yet decent acoustic guitar for playing around the house - more for fun than for the studio or stage. If you or someone you know have an extra axe they're looking to part with, let me know.

Got a text around 3PM Saturday from my brother Tom, offering us two extra tickets to that evening's Saturday Night Live. Now, I grew up on SNL and know these things are fairly hard to come by, with people keeping their names in the ticket lottery system for years and never hearing back, so we dropped everything, called up friends to break plans and hit the turnpike north toward the big apple. Taylor Swift was pulling double duty as both the host and the musical guest and I have to admit that my knowledge of her music is extremely minimal but whatever - I think she did a good job and the show (at least live) was pretty solid.
All in all, it was extremely cool to see how one of these things gets pulled off. Dress rehearsal ended around 10:30 PM so you can imagine that time is tight. The set was fairly tiny and separated into 5 or 6 smaller stage areas. The crew worked hard during commercial breaks, putting up and tearing down sets in seconds - literally. It was pretty intense to see. My brother Tom posted a well written blog about the whole experience - you can check it out here to get his more detailed take on the experience. Include a 2 hour delay inside the Lincoln Tunnel complete with folks falling asleep at the wheel in the SUV one lane over, followed by a mad dash home to try and beat the sunrise and you've a pretty good idea of what went down on our end.
No more then 5 minutes after sending this poster to the screen printer, I get the text that the whole Echo and the Bunnymen tour has been cancelled! A total bummer but that’s how it goes in rock-n-roll sometimes. There’s talk of rescheduling the shows for spring 2010 so hopefully this poster will resurface in printed form sometime next year. I don't know - I'm pretty happy with it.
Probably one of the most under-rated Stones songs and way ahead of it's time in sound. I wish they did a few more tunes with this kind of groove.

Finished a couple of new collages, including this one, entitled 747. Prints are now available in the society6 store. Or visit the artsprojekt store, where you can also get this bad boy on a t-shirt, if that's more your style. Ain't that America...
Saw Where the Wild Things Are over the weekend and, thankfully, it did not disappoint. Spike Jonze nailed it, staying pretty true to the vibe of the original book while expanding on the characters and bringing some personality to Max and the beasts. Loved it.
Also caught Stacey Peralta's gripping documentary on the gangs of LA, Crips and Bloods: Made in America, which was also excellent and fairly intense. He did a good job of breaking down the situation over there and showing how a series of events and circumstances pretty much created the perfect storm for the rise of gang lifestyle. It's available for instant viewing on Netflix so if that's how you roll, I suggest checking it out.

Sorry for the brief lapse in conversation, but I spent the better part of Thursday and Friday donating my services once again to the 24+ hour graphic design benefit (madness) known as Create-A-Thon. For more info, check out the Red Attic Studio blog.
Congrats to the Appalachia Skate Kommission who, after years of fundraising, finally opened the gates on the Friends of Coal public skate park this weekend. Over the years, I donated two custom painted decks to help raise money for the park and I'm super stoked to know that the kids now have a place to skate. Hopefully I can make it down for a visit one day.
And speaking of skateboarding, saw the Flip video and it's pretty bananas. Everyone's got solid parts - Luan, Geoff Rowley, David Gonzales, Appleyard, Bob-gnar, Penny, everyone. A personal favorite though was Lance Mountain's - great to see him still putting it down. The whole video's solid. And the Shane Cross footage is golden.
Saw The Gaslight Anthem for the third time this year last night and, as expected, they haven't slowed down one bit and still bring it live. And being from NJ, the Philly show was a bit of a homecoming for the boys, so they were all smiles, bringing friends onstage for songs and calling out folks in the audience. They even busted out a great cover of The Animal's House of the Rising Sun, which was killer. Also enjoyed The Loved Ones, who are from Philly and played a great punk set. Great night of music all around.

This Saturday night in Philadelphia, stop by for the third installment of Good Wood, a silent auction of art on skate decks to benefit Stay True. The show features over 15 different artists, including Leo Espinosa, Mike Burdick and Don Kilpatrick plus a special installation piece by AJ Fosik. It all goes down at 6pm at the Slingluff Gallery, 11 W. Girard Ave in scenic Fishtown. Beer+art+benefit=no brainer so brave the coming rain and check out what's good.
Stay True is a non-profit organization based in Philadelphia dedicated to offering under-privileged, at-risk youth the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become powerful agents of social/political change in their communities.

I added a couple of new skate decks to the artsprojekt shop - check 'em out here and pick one up for your collection of shred sleds. Both features photos I took with a disposable camera in the South Dakota Badlands.
And speaking of skateboarding, one of my favorite videos of all time, just for the sheer irreverence of it and because it's so loose and so much fun, like skateboarding should be, was Chomp On This. And this clip is classic. Nice to know Jamie Thomas has a sense of humor.

Was lurking around the local Borders over the weekend, as I often do, and peeped the new Nick Hornby book, Juliet, Naked. Now, I dig his writing and have read a lot of his books so I browse the inside cover, which described the book as being about a struggling, Dylan-esque singer named Tucker, who has a son named Jackson and lives in Pennsylvania. I mean, that's strange, right? I'm sure it's just a coincidence but it's still strange. Let's compare - Christopher Tucker: struggling, Dylan-esque singer (check), in PA (check) with a son named Jackson (check and mate). I do know that Hornby used to hang in Philly with Marah, who used to come see The Sitch back in the day. Coincidence or not, it caught me off guard.
Anyway, Tom Watis has a new site up as well as a live record ready to drop this fall - go to his site where you can download a preview of the first 8 songs. I saw him on the Glitter and Doom tour last year in Columbus, and he was amazing, so I'm super stoked that this collection is being released.

Random Notes from the Happy Mondays/Psychedelic Furs show the other night: 1: I'm pretty positive babysitters make a killing every time the Furs swing through town 'cause it was definitely mom's big night out at The Troc. And those moms enjoyed quite a few beverages and really liked to scream loudly for the guitar player.
3: No lie - 40+ year old sensitive pony tail man started a fight with another old man at the end of the show. Pretty sure it was a pre-existing beef left over from when Flock of Seagulls played town back in '85.
4: I felt embarrassed for Shawn Ryder. I really did. I know he needs the money but fronting a band of fashion victim hipsters, playing along to a iPod, who weren't even born when Pills, Thrills and Bellyaches came out and still calling your band Happy Mondays just makes you look kind of sad and old. One Black Grape tune, Kinky Afro, Loose Fit and Step On, mixed in with five sub-par new tunes and some pop-idol reject with bad dance moves who drowned out Shawn vocals. And did I mention no Bez? What happened, man - what happened.
5: The Furs were amazing live, and Richard Butler looked like he was having a blast on stage. I've never been a huge fan, but they played all the hits and really entertained the crowd. A pleasant surprise for sure.
On a side note: hey - I like Obama and all and I definitely think he's moving the country in the right direction but giving him the Nobel Peace Prize while we still have soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan and Iraq is just wrong and doesn't make sense. Let the guy work for it at least.
Well, that's it for me. Have a great weekend everyone.

It's been a long time coming, but I'm happy to announce that the website for my graphic design/artist studio, Red Attic Design Studios, is finally up and running. Please take a moment to surf around and let me know what you think - you can get there directly by just hitting the design button on this page. The site has a full print, fine art, video and web portfolios as well as a new front page blog that we'll be updating regularly with info on new projects, updates on what our clients are up to, new pieces of artwork and random other mentions of various things we’re into at any given moment. Hope you like it.
And believe it or not, I never thought I'd say this but I actually have some paintings hanging up in the mall. Well, not just any mall, but the über-high end, super swanky King of Prussia mall. You know, where Will Smith shops when he's back in town. Anyway, the work is hanging in one of the few independent stores left on the property, AG47 Artisian Silver, who specialize in some really cool, one of a kind hand-made silver jewelery from Mexico. Stop by and say "HI" to José - and tell 'em Joe Castro sent you.

I couldn't make it to the NJ premier a few weeks back in Asbury Park, but have heard the film is amazing. And, really, with this nice, crisp fall weather settling in - what could be nicer than chillin' outside with a drink in hand and watching some insane wave charging? Put the finishing touches on a new collage a few days ago - click above for the large view. Or peep it over at society6.
Anyway, TIME magazine recently published some long forgotten, depression-era photographs that were actually taken in color.. Apparently Kodachrome, which unfortunately stopped production on it's film stock earlier this year, started creating color film in the early 30's, although it wasn't widely used yet since black and white was the norm. For a point in time that for so long has only existed in drab monotone images, so much so to the point where the events don't always seem real for those who weren't there, these photos really bring that period back to life. Beautiful. I hope they publish more of them.
Anyway, Jason C. recently went through his wide selection of vintage Young Vulgarian recordings and posted a bunch of their albums on startledsalmon.com, including the never-before released Milquetoast on a Catafalque, complete with the never-before-seen artwork I did for it back in 2004. I'll admit, at the time, I was really bummed out that this record never got a proper release because it's really, really good, although probably a grower so give it a little time to worm it's way into your psyche before you hate on it. Download everything right here, right now.

Wow, it's Friday already? Where did the week go? Blowin' it as usual.
So, the KRS-ONE show was great - a little heavy on the Buckshot songs, which were good but, honestly, I didn't know a lot of them and I'm a much bigger KRS fan. And, no, you can't complain when the show is free. But KRS-ONE killed it whenever he got on the mike, and even took it out to the crowd and dropped some freestyle verses up in the cypher. Lucky for you, I got the audio clip - peep it out here.
Anyway, if you're in DE tonight, The Sky Drops are playing at Mojo 13with Dead Meadow - should be a great show, and their first local one in a while. Stop by and pick up their new album if you don't already have it. Show starts at 9PM. Did I mention Three 4 Tens are playing too? Like I said, with that bill, it should be a good night. KRS-ONE's playing a free show at The Troc tomorrow night - all you need to do is hit the box office and grab some tickets. I've seen him live before and he was amazing so don't sleep on this one. Besides, it's recession proof pricing homeboy.
And I know I'm a little late on this but have you seen this Chris Cole vs. Dennis Busenitz battle? Insane. I have to admit, though, I was pulling for Busenitz. Love that dude's style. Plus I tend to go for the underdog.

Finally saw Inglourious Bastards last night and really dug it. Lots of great Tarantino dialogue mixed with some scenes to make you do the seat squirm. Plenty of tension throughout - and the dude who played the main SS guy was amazing. Brad Pitt was hilarious as well but, honestly, the film could've used some more of his character. And before you say it - yes, it was a little long but whatever.
Also saw Tilt Mode's Bonus Round which didn't disappoint. Caswell's got a stellar last part but Louie and Rojo both hold their own. The young bucks are pretty sick as well. And this Jerry Hsu clip is hilarious.

Been on a Kinks kick lately, and have had this song on repeat for the past few days. I've only recently begun to really dig into their catalog - for some reason they never really appealed to me in the past (we all make mistakes). But The Situation were compared to The Kinks quite a few times and now I understand the reference.
And speaking of Black Label, "The Kid" Jason Adams will be showing some new paintings this month at the Slingluff Gallery in Fishtown, along with photographer Vanna Weaver. The opening bash is Saturday night from 6-9PM. I'm told that, unfortunately, Mr. Adams can't make it but that doesn't mean you shouldn't stop by and have a drink in his honor. 11. Skipped town for a week and headed south, straight to the beach for a little chill time, just total beach-bum lounging with sketch book in hand. Weather was perfect. Read a good collection of short stories by Miranda July, as well as Bukowski'sHot Water Music. Saw Julie and Julia, which was good. Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci pretty much own it. Even ran into some old friends I hadn't seen in years. DE is a small wonder indeed.
So, yeah, it's back to the grind I guess. Stay tuned for more updates.
Hit the cinema and saw Orphan yesterday and, yeah, it was pretty good. Definitely a bit disturbing and a lot creepier than most of the horror films that come out these days. The ending was a nice twist as well. I did feel like it was missing something but overall, it's worth checking out.
Anyway, some kind soul has finally uploaded the long lost Rolling Stones cult tour film, Cocksucker Blues for your viewing pleasure. You can check it out here. The band have always claimed they blocked the film's release due to it's raw portrayal of drug use, elicit sex and overall cliche rock-n-roll behavior but honestly I think in their hearts they knew it wasn't very good. It's pretty boring actually - kind of like being the only sober person at a party where everyone else is stoned. I caught it in Philly at a secret showing years ago, along with a Jack Kerouac short. You're much better off watching Gimme Shelter again. No disrespect to Robert Frank though - I still love The Americans
And speaking of films, our good friend/comedian/musician/filmmaker Michael Sanchez has a short film entered into this howcast.com contest - click here to watch it, then give the film a vote and help a brother out. He did a great job on it.

Well, a day late and an dollar short as usual but can you blame me? I mean, have you seen this trailer for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus? I spent the whole afternoon yesterday fawning over it. Looks amazing both visually and thematically. Cast is insane. And Tom Waits as the Devil? Looking forward to this one.
Anyway, last December I got an email from Andy Howell asking if I'd like to be involved in ARTSPROJEKT, which was insane on a number of levels, mainly because I personally don't know Andy but I've been a fan of both his skating and his artwork since the Schmidt Stix/New Deal days. I mean, I must've watched Useless Wooden Toys a million times as a teen. So I checked out the list of other artists involved (Shepard Fairy, DALEK, Ron Cameron, Caballero, etc) and was left stoked, honored, humbled and, honestly, confused as to why I was being asked. But hey, you take these gifts when they come. Fast forward three months later I finally send in my submission application and never heard back so I assumed they just sobered up or came to their senses. Well, two weeks ago I finally got the acceptance email. Better late than never.
You can check out the new shop here. Stop by often as I plan to add more stuff in the near future. Suggestions or questions are always welcome. If there's anything you'd like to see, just let me know.

As some of you may've already heard through the grapevine, I was recently fortunate enough to work with a good friend of mine, Justin Clowes (aka slowmotiontrax), and co-direct a video for one of my favorite bands, The Sky Drops. The track is called Truth Is and it's taken from their full length debut album, Bourgeois Beat, which comes out tomorrow (Aug. 11). Pick it up on iTunes, Amazon or maybe directly from their site. If you're in the UK, I believe it hits stores in October. I've heard the album and it's really strong and, no - I'm not just saying that because I did the video. Trust me - your ears will thank you. For more info, visit www.theskydrops.com
Thanks again to Rob, Monika and Justin - I had a great time working with all of you. A true pleasure.
More good news tomorrow.

Ok, Ok, I know it's been a while. My apologizes - I didn't mean to leave you hanging. I snuck off to the beach with the fam some much needed rest and relaxation, sans technology. no tv. no computer. no phone. just good coffee, hot pizza and salty water. and few good games of pinball of course.
Anyway, things are busy here nonetheless, and we've got a lot going on here so stay tuned next week for some announcements.
That's it for me - time to get out and enjoy the summer weather while it's here. Have a great weekend.

Forgot to mention I saw 500 Days of Summer last weekend and, no, it wasn't very good. Kind of one of those times where you're watching, thinking "I should really love this movie, right? " but in reality, the whole thing is just kind of flat and lifeless. 100 minutes of bummer.
I did watch the new Powell video, FUN though, and it's really good and a bit underrated. Ben Hatchell and Jordan Hoffart's parts, especially, are super sick. Good soundtrack too. Check it out here.

Well, for all of you who've been asking "Castro, where's the music at?" I give you the Elektrik Körndögg. Oh, you thought that was just the sangria talking? No way, bro - we got together one night in the sweltering east coast humid heat and threw it down alive and kicking. Keep in mind while listening to this stuff that it's just improvisational jams, not songs. There were no pre-jam discussions, no "hey, this part goes like this", no "what key are we playing in", no words, no talk, no blueprint, nothing. Just plug in, tune up and rock out. This is music is it's rawest form, off notes and all, so enjoy it for what it is and what it isn't. Thanks to Jay Caddle for hosting and posting. Good times. Good times.
Anyway, I'm now also posting artwork on the society6 website so feel free to follow me here. The site features a lot of great artists and is overall very cool and worth checking out.

Beastie Boys + Nas = best match up since Kiss met the Phantom of the Park? Click here for the boom bap. Heavily looking forward to the new Beastie record. Get well soon MCA!
Anyway, saw a great documentary on the ever reclusive Scott Walker over the weekend called 30th Century Man. I'd heard his name dropped many times over the years but, honestly, wasn't overly familiar with his music, other than a few Walker Brothers singles. Can't say that I learned too much about the man but I definitely dug the tunes I heard and plan to pick up a few records. Pretty out there stuff but worth checking out for sure.
And I just found out that one of my favorite artists of the last few years, Dash Snow, passed away Monday in nyc at 27. What a loss. Never met the man but he has definitely been a major inspiration on my artwork. RIP Dash Snow.
And speaking of good music, the new Mos Def is super good. Best thing he's done musically in a while. Strong not wrong.

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the show on Saturday at the new Slingluff Gallery. Above is my contribution to the Group Birdhouse show. It'll be hanging at the gallery for another two weeks - stop by or be forced to beg D$ for look-see.
And I have some new limited edition prints and collages available on my etsy site - click here to check it out.

Went to the Mark Gonzales opening last night at the Half Gallery - I'll try to post some photos in the next couple of days. In the meantime, peep this new video he co-directed with Bill Strobeck for Jason Swartzman's band, Coconut Records. So good. And the show is up until August 3rd so plan your nyc road trips accordingly.
Speaking of art, legendary graf/skate artist Bigfoot has a new show opening this Saturday at the grand opening of the Slingluff Gallery, which used to be called Studio 2728. With the new name comes a new and improved location down in Fishtown, right near the M Room at 11 W. Girard. You may recognize Bigfoot's work from some of the stuff he did for IPath shoes a while back. There will also be a one-night only "Group Birdhouse" art auction going down simultaneously to help raise money for the PSPCA. Over thirty artist were given pieces off wood shaped like a small house and were told to go to town. Artist involved include myself, Dave Delaney, Kevin Margitich, Jonathan and Leigh Slingluff, Bigfoot and others. Starting bids will be super low so come and get some. Things run from 6-9PM so stop by this Saturday.
Photo of the Wednesday (on Thursday)
Well, a day late and a dollar short once again but what can you do. Here's a photo of Rob Montejo of The Sky Drops to make up for it. Word on the street is their new album will be dropping sooner rather than later - keep your antenna up to receive the transmission.

Damn, another week between posts. I think you nailed it, Dave - blowin' it in the blogoshpere for sure.
Anyway, Jay Z does us all a favor and declares the death of autotune. Am I wrong or is this the first dis track aimed at an inanimate piece of studio equipment?
And since I'm bombarding you with all these visual homework assignments, definitely download Nike SB's AM video, Debacle. Brock is a beast but Grant Taylor steals the show. Between this and his Mind Field part, dude is on fire.

Damn, it's hard to believe The Stone Roses album came out 20 years ago but apparently it did. Time goes by when you're having fun, I guess. Anyway, the powers that be are gearing up all kinds of celebratory re-releases to milk every last ounce of your hard earned coin, including this monster, which checks in at a whopping $119 and includes everything but the kitchen sink. Reissue, repackage, re-evaluate the songs..... you know the rest
Sorry for the week of silence but I took off to Scotland and totally disconnect myself from the grid and grabbed some much needed change of scenery. I'll try to post some photos in the next few weeks once I get the b/w rolls back from the lab.
In the meantime, just sit back and enjoy a little Nico. Perfect music for this dreary northeast drizzle Philly's been engulfed in.

Thanks to everyone who made it out Saturday to Studio 2728 - it was great to see so many friendly faces. Special thanks to Carly and D$ for DJing, ERA for the afterparty, Jonathan and Leigh at 2728 for all their help, Jen for just generally being amazing, Kevin Margitich for the nice review and to Nick P (aka Rick Smoothington), who came all the way down from Queens just to be there. Thanks everyone - it was a great night.
For those who missed it, the show will be up throughout the month of June and pieces will be available for online purchase - visit studio2728.com for more info. And I have photos of some of the paintings and collages up on my flicker page as well.
So, after all the madness, I'm taking a week off to just chill so this will be my last post until sometime next week. Over and out.
Have a great week everyone!

Random Notes from the Chaos 1. Watched Ghostbusters outdoors the other night at haunted Fort Mifflin, with planes flying low on route to the airport next door and the film being projected from a 16mm projector attached to a motorcycles sidecar. Scratch that one off the bucket list homeboy. Done and done.
2. You know when you go to, say, Bertucci's, and they bring you a big basket full of bread? Well, some diners in NYC step it up a notch and bring a giant bowl of pickles to the table. Heaven for sure.
5. Caught a great little doc the other day called A Man Named Pearl about this amazing self taught gardner in South Carolina who took plants out of the dumpster of the local nursery and grew them into this insanely sculpted abstract tree art. Very cool and borderline magical.
6. Speaking of gardening, got infected with poison ivy. Bummer for the summer.
That's all for now - off to frame some art. See you Saturday? I hope so.

Went out to feed the fish this afternoon, the sky was beginning to darken with the approaching thunderstorm. I got to the pond and the birds that frequent the yard just started freaking out, screeching loudly and flying about. Looked in the water and found two dead birds, still floating, one with a twisted neck. Not really sure what happened there, officer but the backyard body count is up to 13 or so. Never a dull moment at la casa de Castro.

Random Notes from the Past Few Days 1. Finally saw the rest of Notorious, (see post 813) and it was decent. Not amazing, but worth a viewing if you're into hip-hop.
2. Also watched the Roman Polanski doc, Wanted and Desired, which was excellent and overall just a solid film. Dude had a pretty tragic and crazy life for sure. I had no idea, though, that he had a thing for under aged girls. Very creepy.
3. If the squirrels don't get your strawberries, the slugs will. At least in my garden. Look before you bite kids.
4. The new RVCA promo is online and super sick. Leo Romero is a beast.
Anyway, heading back to the studio in a last ditch attempt not to embarrass myself at next week's opening. Wish me luck. Over and out.

Watched the Roky Erickson film, You're Gonna Miss Me, which was fairly sad and more than a bit disturbing but very well done. I never knew too much about Roky, or the 13th Floor Elevators for that matter, but when I was 14, I had a cassette of the soundtrack to Return of the Living Dead, which had his song Burn the Flames on it, and I used to listen to over and over again and just loved it. It was so spooky. For years I knew nothing about him and could never find any albums or anything (this was the late 80's, after all) but recently got turned on to a few tracks. Great stuff for Halloween.
Well, sorry for the long silence but, with the upcoming deadline of the Studio 2728 art show fast approaching, I've been on studio lock down with the radio on, trying to make the magic happen. So far, I'm pretty happy with the results.
Anyway, it hasn't been all work - I did slip out to see The Gaslight Anthem last Thursday night in Towson, MD, simply because they were so good in Philly last month, I had to head off of our home turf just to make sure it wasn't all a figment of my imagination. Thankfully, all fears were put to rest and the boys played another amazing high energy set. A band called Pela opened up, who played a strong set as well and finished with an spot on cover of Guns of Brixton. Good night overall. Thanks Linda!
Spike Jonze has a new site up called We Love You So, which focuses on his upcoming film, Where The Wild Things Are, which I really can't wait to see. It's worth checking out.
Sad but true - another great bites the dust. Captain Chaos has passed on people, and the world is left a lot less humorous. Rest in peace Dom DeLuise. Loved that guy.

So, as many of you've probably heard already, I'll be having my first official gallery gig this June at Studio 2728, featuring brand new paintings and collages. The opening reception is Saturday June 6, from 6-9:00 PM and the address is 2728 Girard Ave. I know this is pretty advance notice, but this is a big deal for me, and I'm super excited so I hope you can make it out. Please help spread the word.
And we'll be throwing an after party right around the corner at Bar ERA (28th and Parrish), a great little hole in the wall with a good vibe and cheap drinks. Plus Carly and Royce from phillygirlabouttown.com will be spinning solid tunes all night. So come for the opening, stay for the party and help us celebrate.
And I'm working on some sort of giveaway, which will most likely be a free, extremely limited edition print for the first 15 people at the opening, just to sweeten the deal. More on that in the coming weeks.
And speaking of Studio 2728, this Saturday is the opening for the much hyped Chase Lisbon show - get there early 'cause the place is gonna be insanely packed for sure. Peep the commercial here.
Good things are in the works. Have a great weekend everyone.

Sorry - no chance of me posting today. It's 75 degrees and, contrary to what pop culture might have you believe, not always sunny in Philadelphia so I'm heading outside to get some while the gettings good. Have a good weekend everyone!
Woke up yesterday and was immediately forced into Round Two with my latest nemeses, the Great Blue Heron, who returned to the scene of the crime for another quick bite. Our villain seems to prefer striking at dawn or dusk, like a vampire in reverse. Nonetheless, I got there just in time and frantically banged on the glass to get his attention. We locked eyes and, for a moment, it felt like showdown at the OK Corral. He paused, backed off, then flew off into the morning sky with pride bruised and a stomach empty. He'll be back though, I'm sure.
Anyway, I have a new print of a painting I did of Brigitte Bardot on sale at etsy - check it out here and pick one up for twenty dollars american. First come, first served.

Looks like D-way put another notch on his belt with yet another entry into the Guinness Book of World Records - this time for breaking the land speed record for a skateboard, hitting an insane 73mph. I can't even imagine although I'm pretty sure I've seen Cardiel skate that fast, but that might've just been an illusion.
There's a great interview up that Bill Flanagan did with Bob Dylan, all about his new album Together Through Life that you can check out here. Worth the time for sure,
And thank you to everyone who's dropped a line or emailed some kind words about my art work lately - it's very humbling, a little surprising and much appreciated. And just to give an advance heads up, Saturday June 6th will be the opening night for my show at Studio 2728 in Philly, which will feature all new work, including a bunch of new paintings that I'm excited about. Hope you can all make it out. More info to come soon.
Hope everyone had a fun tax day yesterday. Always a pleasure to fork over your hard earned bread to the government, who will then take that money and bail out the bank that at one time ruined your credit history because you were late on a payment. But ain't that America Johnny Cougar.
Anyway, Tim forwarded me this very cool 2 part interview with Big Bro Tom from Newsarama. And a reliable source (ie: the TV Guide) has told us that Tom will be appearing on the Food Network's Last Cake Standing this Sunday night at 8PM, tasting and judging the best super-hero themed cake. Anyone out there with cable who'd like to invite us over for a viewing and maybe some light vegetarian fare, hit me up.
New K-os album out - sounds great but no US release? What's up with that?
Finally saw New York Doll, the roc-doc about one time Dolls bass player turned Mormon, Arthur "Killer" Kane, who passed away days after finally reuniting onstage with his former bandmates. Very well done and original - it avoids many of the Behind the Music style cliches and gets to the heart of things. And I found it refreshing to see a film about one of rock's lesser known soldiers. And the DVD includes lots of bonus Morrissey interview footage as well. Worth your time whether you're a fan of the band or not.

Woke up Saturday morning, peeped out the window and was greeted by a four foot tall thieving Great Blue Heron scarfing down my favorite koi, straight outta the fish pond like it was the big glass case at Red Lobster or something. Threw on some jeans, hauled it down the stairs then out the door but the culprit was long gone. Luckily he only got one fish but I have a feeling he'll be back soon for another bite. So, after watching The Life Aquatic one too many times, I figured revenge was as good a scientific purpose as any but unfortunately, the Heron's a made bird, totally protected and untouchable. Dynamite is still on the table though.
Saw Cadillac Records last night and, as far as music movies go, it was decent. Not amazing but kind of fun. Mos Def was a let down as Chuck Berry though, playing it a little too goofy for my taste, but Beyonce's Etta James was pretty good. And the chronology of some of the events was a bit off, and there was definitely some liberties taken with the events - plus no Bo Diddley or Sonny Boy Williamson? But I digress - overall the whole thing just made me want to learn more about Howling Wolf, who was the baddest of the bunch, with one of the coolest voices ever put to record. For real. Worth a watch, just don't take it too seriously.
Am I losing my mind or did I really see Sir Mix A Lot rapping "I like square butts..." in a Burger King commercial last night? For a minute I thought I had awoken on the couch, stuck in some surreal half dream-like state of awareness or something but no - it's a real commercial. Sad but true.
Anyway, yesterday I shipped out three brand new collages to Los Angeles for Buena ventura, a benefit art show at the Red Brick Gallery for The Land of Plenty skateboard foundation. The show also features work by Andy Jenkins, Geoff McFetridge, Douglas Miles, Michael Coleman and a whole host of others. The benefit is this Saturday, April 11 from 7-11PM with music by Mr Dope America and surf visuals by Woodshed Films. For all my peeps in the LA area, you should definitely stop by and check it out - wish I could be there 'cause it sounds epic. All proceeds will supports the LOP - for more information, click here.

Sorry for another no post Friday but I had to perform a rush hanging of artwork at the Chestnut Hill Starbucks in Philly. Art will be on display and available for purchase throughout the month of April, including two brand new collages. So new, in fact, that I never had time to shoot proper photos of them, which is a bummer. Special thanks to Eneida for setting this all up.

Saw Synecdoche NY and what a major disappointment it was. Honestly, it took a lot of work just to make it through the whole thing. Total let down.
Anyway, Richmond street artist and former skin beater for hardcore legends Avail and Kepone, Ed Trask will be showing some of his newest paintings at Studio 2728 in Philadelphia. The opening bash is this Saturday night so stop by if you’re in the area - should be a good time. 6-9PM. 2728 Girard Ave. And for more info on Ed's work, check out this nice little interview that ran in Giant Robot a while back.

Saw The Gaslight Anthemon Sat and hot damn - the kids definitely delivered. The band brought the energy and the crowd responded, fists in the air, passionately singing every line so loud it drowned out the PA. No one stood still and all were locked together in that moment - no one feigning boredom, trying oh so hard to look detached while checking email on their iphone. I don't know - for a jaded old music head like me, it was a sight for sore eyes. I even thought I saw Dirty Harry in the corner, hair slicked back and smiling his approval at the mass of true believers. And any band that walks out on stage to Tom Waits is doing something right in my book. Sleep tight kids for rock-n-roll is alive and well.
Anyway, Nick P. recently unearthed a slew of old Situation photos from the few years he was our faithful roadie/merch guy, including a bunch of gems I'd never seen before, which was a nice surprise. You can check them out here.

Sorry for the delay in posting but I just got back from four days in San Francisco, sans computer. There's nothing better for your soul than stepping away from the ever present glow of the monitor - my only wish is that the time away was a bit longer. SF was great though and I hope to post some photos in the next couple of days. Special thanks to Ry-Ry for the drinks at zeitgeist and the general hospitality. Good times, good times. Hit me up if you ever find yourself in Philly my friend.
Anyway, hit up Amoeba and picked up some great vintage rockabilly including Wanda Jackson - so, so under rated.
.
Nick Zegel sent over this trailer for a new surf film he's been working on with Kyle Pahlow called A Pleasant Surprise. You gotta love the look of 16mm film, which can even bring out the beauty in Dirty Jerzey. No word on a release date or premier, but sign up on their site and you can receive a free copy of their new zine via snail mail. I mean, shot on film and a real, printed on paper, old school zine? Sign me up homeboy. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Heard the Pete Doherty solo record today and it's surprisingly decent. Much better than what he's been releasing with Babyshambles. It's pretty singer/songwriter but the lyrics are strong and it nice and under produced. You can peep the whole record for yourself here.

Well it's Tuesday - what better reason for some random Mark Gonzales madness? Ok, ok - I know it's not St. Patty's Day related but I'm so over it already. And yes, I am part Irish.
But speaking of Ireland - Thin Lizzy rocks and is way too underrate. Easily the best fro in rock-n-roll.

Random Notes from the weekend: 1. Dr. Dog played a great set at UofD Friday night and proved they could bring it live. I thought they were spot on with high energy and Toby blowing out his voice early on but keeping it rock-n-roll. And Sean Walsh and the National Reserve were a trip man - their guitarist was constantly in the crowd between bands kicking off spontaneous dance parties with whomever was brave enough to throw down some moves. The band had a great retro sound and they even threw in a couple soul tunes for good measure. All in all a good night.
2. Atlas were great as well. And for a group whose members are all under 21, they show a lot of promise and I'm looking forward to seeing where they take their sound.
3. Picked up the Dan Auerbach record, Keep It Hid, over the weekend and immediately feel in love with it. It's definitely got a spooky, night time swamp blues vibe going, but there's some elements of The Stooges and Tom Waits thrown in there as well. He kind of reminded me vocally of a much darker Ray Lamontagne. If this sounds like your bag, then definitely grab it. Thanks to Mr. Jenkins for the tip off.
4. This new Mike Tyson documentary looks pretty intense. Looking forward to that one for sure.
But, while I've been away, if you haven't been watching the Guy Mariano episodes of Epicly Later'd, then you need to check that out for real. True skate history there. Personally, I'm looking forward to the Video Days episode. That show just keeps getting better and better.
Anyway, heading out to see Dr. Dog at UofD tonight in Newark. Atlas is opening up, and I've heard nothing but good things. Nice to hear there's still some decent bands in Newark - maybe the scene is on the come up?
Gotta run. Have a great weekend everyone.

Apparently Lil' Kim spoke to the spirit of Big Poppa via a dream and was told he's very disappointed in the Notorious biopic. Now, I can't really comment on this because I still haven't seen the whole movie, not since a freak water main break shut down the entire theater. Not sure if the spirit of Biggie had anything to do with that but who knows? Maybe he's getting into some Poltergeist action on the other side. Holla! And still no word where TuPac's been hiding.
Saw The Bronx Tale in DC over the weekend, with Chazz Palminteri recreating his original, semi-autobiographical one man show (which the film was later based on) live on stage. Being a huge fan of the movie, I had a hard time imagining how it was going to translate but, in some ways, it was stronger and, overall, a bit funnier. Palminteri is a great story teller and, even with no intermission, he keeps you enamored and spellbound. Worth seeing if it comes around again.
Also picked up the new M. Ward disc, Hold Time, and, although it took a few spins to grow on me, I think it's pretty strong. It's not as immediately accessible as his last album, but the songs are good and the sound is spot on with his trademark vintage feel. He even through in a Buddy Holly cover for good measure. Good road trip music for sure.
RIP Steve Malin
Back when I was an awkward and shy eight year old, my family moved from Long Island, NY to Glasgow, DE and the first person I met on move in day was Steve Malin, who's family lived five houses down on the same street. He immediately hit it off with my brother and I and we remained close friends for the next 10+ years. To me, Steve had no pretensions - he wasn't out to impress anybody or try to be something he wasn't. He was just a really good guy, sincere, very friendly and extremely funny. He was always goofing around, acting a fool and leaving everyone smiling.
Racing bikes in the summer breeze and watching horror movies over six packs of Jolt. Epic dirt bomb battles in backyard forts and harassing the ice cream man for free candy. WWF at the Spectrum and white water rafting in PA. Bottle rockets off the roof and diners at midnight. Nearly every one of my favorite childhood memories included Steve and the rest of our crew in Porter Square. And even though we all went our separate ways after high school, as people sometime do, we always kept in loose touch and I always considered him a true friend and part of the family.
My sincerest condolences and sympathies go out to his wife, his son, his friends and family, especially his parents who were kind enough to always treat me as one of their own. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Rest in peace my friend.

Random Highlights from the Weekend 1. Mickey Rourke on Barbara Walters. I'm slightly bummed that he didn't win the Oscar, but Sean Penn definitely deserved it for Milk, so you can't hate on that.
2. Mind Field - pretty amazing in both the skateboarding and the overall art direction. Everyone comes through with super strong and original parts but Heath pulls out an incredible curtain closer, skating to Speedway by Morrissey. Great vid.
3. Brussel sprouts - maybe the most underrated veggie out there?
The kinks have been worked out so let's do this...
I was going through a box of old video tapes and came across this footage of Matt Hensley, Ron Allen and Sal Barbier skating in Anne Arundel, MD at an H-Street demo. I believe the year was 1989, but it could have been '90? Anyway, as a kid who spent hours watching Hokus Pokus with his jaw scraping the carpet, seeing these guys rip in the flesh was a mind-blowing event. Hensley still has one of the coolest styles out there. Enjoy.
And for all you who may not be into vintage skate footy, I also came across this clip of schroeder performing vitamin purple at the Baccus Theater in 1995. And yes, that's me on second guitar, making random wah-wah noises. The additional drummer is Kevin Cannon from The Absurd. Good times, good times. I loved schroeder and live, they were amazing, thanks mainly to their all ages following who always threw down and danced liked crazy. Just pure pop brilliance - and another band who never really got their due. Enjoy. And don't forget to order their greatest hits disc, redux.

OK - sorry to have to break yesterday's promise but youtube's been giving me problems so the vinatge video clips won't be up until Wednesday. Hopefully. A dog totally ate my homework, I swear. An old friend came in from out of town. The bus was late. There were locusts, a terrible flood, it wasn't my fault.
Saw Man on Wire over the weekend and it's mind blowing. Seriously - you want to talk daredevil? This is the real deal. Well done, very genuine and with good storytelling. Check it out for sure.
Went to the Tooker exhibit at PAFA and that's solid as well. I didn't know much about his work going into it, but left very impressed, especially with his 50's/60's output. Technique for days and humbling for sure. Peep more here, then check out the exhibit here.
Good stuff coming tomorrow in the form of vintage video clips - I promise. Stay tuned.

Sorry for the lack in posting - been spending the extra time in the studio painting as well as working on a new video project (more on that in the coming weeks.) So, yeah, not too much else to say right now so let's just hold hands silently and listen to this killer Gonz interview from 2002.

Looks like Linda caught M.I.A. on the Grammy's last night, holding it down with the pregnant swagger and all that and got inspired. So here's Letters From Linda #34 - looks like she's already planning a play date.
Black N Brew has a new website up - check it out here, then head over, order a large cup of coffee and check out my artwork (shameless plug, shameless plug!). It will be up until the end of February.
And I'm seriously looking forward to checking out this long unreleased album by 70's underground Detroit rockers, Death. Love this Politicians In My Eyes track.

Lots of art happenings this weekend - tonight, in Wilmington, DE, Monika Bullette will be showing some of her really cool embroidered work at 800 Tatnall Street. The show is called If You Want Blood (don't we all?) and features a whole group of first state artists. It's one night only so hit the town or live to regret it. 5:30 - 7:30pm.
And Saturday night, Kevin Margitich will be showing some of his recent nature-in-winter inspired work over at Studio 2728. I really dig my man's style - the scratchy line work, the color pallet, the overall looseness of it all. Good stuff. And Mindy Kober is also showing so the show overall should be pretty solid. Things get started around 6PM. 2728 Girard Ave. After party over at ERA? Most likely bro.
So, yeah, I'm still bumming over the passing of Lux Interior but, on a positive note, I'm super stoked philebrity posted this link to Lux's hard to find radio show from 1984, The Purple Knif. The mix as a whole is amazing - lots of quirky early rock-n-roll, just a great vibe. This is the soundtrack for your weekend.

Was having a random internet discussion yesterday with some folks on jst the general awesomeness of The Cramps, which was kind of weird because I haven't listened to them for a little while. Anyway, sure enough, middle of the conversation someone just dropped the news: "Lux Interior just died today." Damn, total bummer. I saw The Cramps a few years ago and, even at 60, Lux was still just going for it live, climbing up speakers and rocking out like a mad man. Music is a little less spooky without him. RIP Lux.
And speaking of classics - Paul's Boutique gets the reissue treatment. Hate to admit it but I still have this one on cassette only. I think it's time for me to upgrade.

Cross your fingers and consider the flood gates open - here's Letters From Linda #33 for your enjoyment.
Now, Linda also sent over this photo of Morrissey which, to be honest, I really didn't need to see. I don't know what he's thinking but it comes off as a plea for attention in my opinion. And Pitchfork gave that new album an 8.1? Really? I don't know - sounded like "Moz goes through the motions" but maybe that's just me. Disappointed but maybe it's a grower.
And don't forget to, as always, check out clubmumble.com.

Wow, sorry for the delay but sometimes the week just slips by. I was bit bogged down, work wise, and was finishing a few new collages which are currently being shown at Black N Brew in South Philly. They'll be up and for sale all month long so stop by and check them out. Free refills on the La Colombe so relax and stay a while. Plus, their breakfast burrito is slammin'.
And speaking of food, free breakfast from Denny's tomorrow? For sure, for sure.
And besides being Groundhog Day, today also marks the 50th anniversary of the Winter Dance Party, the famed final gig for Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. Most people know I've got a huge soft spot for 50's rock-n-roll and went through a fairly obsessive period of Buddy Holly fandom and, somewhere among stacks of old cassette tapes, I have various cover versions of different songs recorded that I'll hopefully post here someday soon. RIP my friends. Little known fact - did you know Waylon Jennings was the bass player in Buddy's band for that show?

Damn, sometimes you ask and sometimes you receive - here's Letters From Linda #32 comin' in hot through the falling snow. Let's hope she keeps them coming.
Anyway, I don't know how I slept on this for so long but apparently the modern day soul factory that is Daptone Records has been hosting a steady stream of insanely good podcasts on their site for free. Click here to get the party started. No, seriously, it will put the cut back in your strut and some glide back in your stride. For real.
And for all you old school Newark hardcore emo heads who might not get down like that, I've got you covered as well. I recently found this hidden gem on youtube - Railhed playing Incision live in some club in St Louis in '93. Damn, that brings back some good memories.

I finally set up a flicker page and have uploaded some photos as well as various paintings and artwork. Check it out here and drop a comment if you feel so inclined. More to come soon.
And I know I've said this many times before, and so many people have expressed their passioned disagreement with this statement, but Buffalo 66 is an amazing film. Watched it again tonight and the cinematography still blows me away. And I just realized that Lance Acord, who has done a lot of the cinematography on Spike Jonze's films, was the film's DP which makes sense. Love that guy's work.
Remember that one time when this column was funny? Good times, good times. I think we need to bring Letters from Linda back.

Tobin Yelland at the Philadelphia showing of Beautiful Losers.
Got word yesterday at 7PM that the film Beautiful Losers was finally being shown in Philly at 8PM that night - so I immediately dropped everything, hopped in the ride and hauled it up I-95N. Worth the trip as the film was nicely shot and pretty entertaining. It didn't really have a strong storyline or anything, so it tended to meander a little, especially since the artists are only loosely connected. Plus, if you had no knowledge of their work before hand, I don't think you left knowing much more about them. That being said though, the artwork was amazing, the interviews were great and overall it was a lot of fun. Plus, you know, Harmony Korine is always pretty entertaining.
Anyway, Tobin Yelland, who was the DP for the film, was there and he stuck around to answer some questions. I've always been into his photography, especially the skate stuff he did with Deluxe and Stereo back in the day. Super nice guy - very gracious, friendly and humble. Check out his work here.
And if you haven't already, check out the lengthy and informative video interview with Matt Hensley over at the Plan B site. Duffy hit the nail on the head when he said everyone tried to skate like Hensley after the H-street videos dropped. He just blew doors on everyone else at the time and had the best style going, save for Gonz and Natas. True classic.

Saw The Wrestler the other night and really enjoyed it. Not the most uplifting film but, given the subject matter, how could it be? I especially loved the cinematography - everything was shot with available light, very grainy, total east coast/jersey rawness. And Mickey Rourke was as good as everyone's been saying. Ending was a little weak but overall it's pretty solid. And if you've never seen it, check out Beyond the Mat, which goes a bit deeper into the dark underbelly of professional wrestling and it's cult of the disposable hero.
Anyway, had a lot more to write earlier but am now drawing a blank. Sorry.
I still have stuff for sale on etsy though - take a look here and check it out.

Yesterday was the four year anniversary of this site - hard to believe we've been keeping up with this nonsense for this long. It's like a dog that just won't die, or a guest that just won't go home. Thanks to everyone who's contributed over the years. More good things to come.
Anyway, was super pumped to see Notorious on Sunday, sat down, got comfortable, watched 20 minutes of some of the worst movie previews I've seen in a while, then, 15 minutes into the flick - the lights come on and it's full on evacuation time. Apparently, there was a water main break and the lobby was covered in water. Damn, film was just starting to heat up. Biggie had just got busted and everything. I don't know - I'm pretty sure the west coast was somehow behind this. What's up - I thought the beef was squashed?
Did sneak out later that night and saw Revolutionary Road, which was a total disappoint. Seriously, I thought it was totally flat, not very well done and a real waste of time.Don't believe the hype on that one.

I just finished watching Bush's farewell address and I'm fairly convinced he's been living in an entirely different country than the rest of us. I mean, did he really take credit for saving the US from financial collapse? And for the success of the Iraq war? And for democracy in Afghanistan? Are you serious?
Anyway, as has been my habit for the past few years, when 3PM EST rolled around, I stopped whatever else was blaring out of the speakers and quickly tuned in to Jonsey's Jukebox on Indie 1031. Today though, I was shocked and extremely disappointed to find that the station was no longer there! Just total shut down, no longer broadcasting and to everyone's total surprise, including the DJ's, who are now out of a job with no warning from management. Honestly, my first thought was "Damn, I feel bad for Steve Jones. He loved that show. Where's he gonna go?" Just yesterday he was talking to Glasvegas and going on about how excited he was that Indie was sending him to Sundance for for a week. And Lemmy was supposed to be on today! Lemmy! It would've been classic! Someone's gotta pick him up though, either another station or XM or something - his show was just too good to get left behind. Easily the best thing I'd heard on radio since whenever. Total Thursday afternoon buzzkill.
Set off 2009 something proper-like and actually went skateboarding last night. Ashamed to say but it was the first time in a long while but hope to get out there much more in '09. Thanks again to Brannon for the hook up. Hit me up to shred.
Anyway, Jason C has taken a brief vacation from Sasquatch hunting and is back on the east coast for a brief visit. Lucky for us, he'll be reuniting with
The Young Vulgarians for a one-off reunion show this Friday night at Mojo 13. If you were lucky enough to see that band back in their day, then you know it's high energy and high drama - not to be missed for sure. Jason also started publishing some of his writings from the past few years via Lulu - you can pick up his first volume here for a mere $10.34 american.
If you're gonna be in Philly, though, on Friday night, then you must hit Girl About Town's Royce's Birthday bash at The North Star. Grammer Debate, Jotto and The Swimmers are all playing and the cover is non-existent. That's right bro - talk about recession pricing 'cause this gig is Free. I think it's bring your own birthday cake though.

Not too much to report here today - things are pretty quiet. Must be winter settling in.
I'm really digging this new video by M. Ward - stunningly simple and beautifully shot. The song's strong as well. Looking forward to the new record - another one to add to the list. '09 might be a good year for music after all.
I forgot to mention this last week but the Jon Carling show that's up at Studio 2728 is amazing. Seriously, the guy's stuff is so rad, very playful and fun but his line work is precise and clean (yes, I'm jealous). Plus I love the fact they're drawn on the back of old pulp novel covers. And if you can't make it to the gallery, have no fear 'cause you can now purchase his pieces online. Tell 'em Castro sent you. The online photos don't really do the work justice though so see them "live" if you can. Word on the street is he may be working on an upcoming project for BJM.
And don't forget to peep Club Mumble - I started contributing sometime last week. Folks have been posting all kinds of goodness. Check it out here.
Sometime late last night, I realized I'd accidentally left off the Vampire Weekend record from my Top Five Favorite Albums of 2008. My bad - it should've made the list for sure.
Anyway, a little birdie came through yesterday with the new Morrissey record, Years of Refusal. Gave it a few spins and, I hate to say it, but it's not so good. Kind of bland actually. A couple of decent tracks, but over all it sounds like watered down retreads of Boy Racer or something. I think Moz is going through the motions a bit on this one - there's no real tunes on it. Truly disappointing.
And speaking of music, The Sky Drops recently posted a live clip of their cover version of The Situation song, The Migrant Living in Your Ear. Check it out here. Much apologizes for the annoying intro conversation and shaky-dog camera work - that's totally my fault. The good news, though, is the band should be dropping their debut full length sometime this year. Looking forward to that one for real!

So, as promised, below are my Top Five Favorite Albums of 2008. Notice I didn't say "Best", I wrote "Favorite" because I don't really believe in competitive music listening anymore. I gave that sport up sometime in my early 20's. This is just to let you know what moved me, musically, in '09- hopefully they'll do the same for you.
Now, I know a lot of you are thinking, "Damn Castro - no hip-hop this year? What's up with that?" Well, bro - I just wasn't feeling much rap this year. The Nas album was decent but spotty, as was GZA'a record and, personally, I can't get into Lil' Wayne. I can only take so much of that processed vocal sound. In my opinion, Hip Hop needs it's punk moment, someone needs to strip it down to that original, raw sound. That being said, though, Lupe Fiasco'sThe Coolest would have been number 6 on the list.
I also want to say that I haven't heard the Fleet Foxes record yet, which everyone says is amazing. If there's anything I missed, please send along some recommendations. I'm always looking for new music.

A few weeks back, Bob Kronbauer asked if I'd be interested in contributing to a new site he was putting together called Club Mumble, which, being a fan of Mumble Magazine, I was pretty stoked about. Well, it finally hit the virtual streets a few days ago - you can check it out here. And although I haven't contributed anything yet, I will start posting shortly so check back often. I saw the list of the other 99 contributors and feel incredibly honored to be included among so many great artists whose work I admire. Seriously- humbling for sure.
Anyway, if you read this site often, you'll know that 2008 was a pretty crazy year on my end - plenty of ups and a few deep, deep downs. Thanks again to everyone for your support over the past 12 months. Personally, I'm looking ahead to 2009 and feel really good about what's to come. I've got lots of plans for updating and improving this site, and I'll be involved in a two man show at Studio 2728 this June, so mark that on your calendars.
Have a happy new year everyone.

Sorry for the lack in posts but I've been out of town, visiting family for the holidays. Anyway, here's some...
Random Notes From the Holidays
1. After months of seeing nothing but those apocalyptic commercials warning we'd be "left in the dark" come February, we finally picked up our digital antenna converter box, courtesy of Uncle Sam. Gotta admit - the new picture is sharp son! And we now get 29 channels. Between that, the internet and netflix, I have no idea why people still drop 100 duckets monthly on cable.
2. Went to Best Buy for the first time in nearly a year and, although it's still a relatively frightening place, I'm happy to report they now carry a nice little vinyl section. On the flip side though, I also discovered a sweet has-yet-to-be-picked-over flea market spot where I got a stack of old LIFE Magazines and a good condition first pressing of Never Mind the Bollocks for five dollars. Holla!
3. Saw Marley and Me and it was pretty good. Funny, sad, touching, and yeah, maybe a little schmaltzy but whatever - feel free to act too cool for school but I'm not afraid to admit that it tugged at my heart strings. Not a dry eye in the building bro.
4. Was at the gym this morning and apparently the Dog the Bounty Hunter look is still alive in Delco. And yes, Virginia, there are still dudes who hit the stairmaster rocking razor blades and a Kill 'Em All shirt with the sleeves cut off.
5. Got a new webcam over the holidays and have signed up for skype - hit me up if you want to get all 21st century with the George Jetson video phone.

While at the gym this morning, I read an article that claimed drinking two cups of coffee immediately post workout will help eliminate muscle soreness the following day. "Hell yeah" I thought, "I am so on this" - got home and brewed a fresh pot right up. So, I'm drinking my coffee and finishing up some random brand of energy bar when I glance at it's label and it says "Contains sugar alcohols, which could have a laxative effect " - not exactly what you want to read after washing one down with two cups of coffee...
Anyway, I just read the Pitchfork Top 50 Albums of 2008 and realized I'd only heard of....I don't know - 10 percent of the bands on there? I guess I'm outta touch with what the kids are into these days. But whatever - I'll be posting my Top Ten discs sometime in the next few days. Wait with baited breath bro.
And a lot of people have been asking if I'm playing in some new band called "This Show is Fire". Sorry to disappoint anyone but no - it ain't me babe. However, former Sitch drummer John Paul Travis IS and the band will be debuting their sound tomorrow night at Mojo 13 as part of the Tric Town showcase - stop by and check 'em out if you're in the 302 area. They're playing with Caterpillar and Caves of Mercury.
Still no snow in Philly, which is disappointing. I've heard NY is getting it pretty good.
Well, that's it for me - have a great weekend everyone. Stay warm.
