Just a heads up – this Saturday (April 17) is Record Store Day so make sure you find the time to venture out of that safe haven you call home and visit your local indie record shop and pick up some new music. There’s lots out there – like the new Dr. Dog, which is really, really good and has been on heavy rotation over here at the studio. Who knows – maybe you’ll even make a new friend. And I mean, like, a real person – not some jpg image on facebook.
People often ask me why I make such a big deal about record store day and the reason is simple – I love a good record store and personally, I don’t want to see them disappear so I’m casting my vote with my dollars. I love digging through the crates in search of something new. I love looking over the album cover art. I like talking to the eccentric employee behind the counter about what’s new , what’s good and what’s not so good. I love all the crazy posters that clutter up the wall and I love the loud music blasting through a set of crummy old speakers. I mean, how many bands were started by people who met in a record store? Hundreds. Can you picture that happening at a Best Buy? Or a Target? Or over iTunes? I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong – I like iTunes and all, especially for the convenience, but, honestly, it’s the convenience of it all that makes it so boring. The excitement lies in the hunt.
Anyway, I’m getting off the soap box now – have a great weekend everyone. Long live rock and roll.
